PcP delivers another heat-resistant flare tower platform for phase 2 of the Johan Sverdrup development in the Norwegian North Sea.

The oil field consists of several platforms and is one of the five largest oil fields on the Norwegian continental shelf (NCS). PcP delivered the first flare tower platform to Johan Sverdrup in 2017.

Due to massive heat exposure, the flare tower has a critical need for a high technology service platform to stand the challenge in the high heat environment up to 1000 degrees. Typically, the flare tower is one of the last elements installed on a platform; constructed onshore, hereafter, installed on the offshore platform: a detailed and costly project that requires a perfectly fabricated solution and on-time delivery.

The flare tower platform is equipped with PcP LHD® heat resistant gratings sheiling the tower construction from the radiated heat. The LHD® grating is produced from high alloyed, Cr-Ni steel, 800H, and resistant to very high temperatures up to 1500 degrees. PcP LHD gratings can reflect radiated heat, reducing temperatures on the underlying structures down to below 200 degrees and works as a heat shield.

“We have more than two decades of experience working with this type of projects. It requires special design, manufacturing, and welding competencies to develop heat resistant solutions for flare tower platforms. We use specially certified welders, third-party QA inspection and simulation FEA software combined with scaled testing.” explains Michael Habekost, CDO at PcP.

To supply the safest solution, PcP is involved in the main part of the process, from designing, drawing, and managing third-party approval of the solution. Knowledge sharing and training are also vital elements of collaboration with partners. In extension, welding is one of the most challenging aspects of the manufacturing process. For this purpose, PcP applies years of experience and specially certified welders.

PcP has more than 30 years of experience supplying solutions to offshore oil and gas projects and has designed and developed high technology service platforms for flare towers since the mid 80’ies. One of the first flare tower platforms was the Oseberg ‘A’ platform in the North Sea. PcP has also provided flare platform solutions to the TROLL “C”, Johan Castberg, ITCHY and, TYRA EAST & WEST platforms, to name a few.
